SAINT JOHN, N.B. — Mayor Shirley McAlary is worried about a federal government proposal to ban the use of salt on streets and sidewalks in the winter.

“I don’t think it would be very safe for us if we weren’t allowed to use salt at all,” she says.

“We won’t be able to drive on the roads. We’re going to be all over the place and there’s going to be lots of accidents.

McAlary is hoping council will agree to write to the federal minister of the environment to express concerns about the proposed ban.
