Sask announces cash for new northern road system

REGINA – Saskatchewan Premier Lorne Calvert has announced a $65.5-million investment in the province’s northern roads system over five years.

The strategy is Saskatchewan’s share of a plan announced in September that will see Alberta complete its portion of the all-weather road linking Fort McMurray to La Loche — One of Northern Saskatchewan’s largest communities.

According top the Saskatoon StarPhoenix, the plan was short on details. However, Calvert says the money will help maintain and build new infrastructure, which will help expand northern sectors like mining, energy, and logging.

New all-weather roads will also connect isolated northern residents in communities like Wollaston Lake to much greater economic opportunities, the premier added. Most towns in the region have substandard gravel roads.

The province’s NDP government will unveil specifics next month, the newspaper reports.

The government believes its investment will lever federal cash for additional northern projects.
