Saskatchewan proposes banning radar detectors in trucks

REGINA, (June 1, 2004) — The province of Saskatchewan is moving to ban radar detectors in semi-trailers, although it will still allow drivers of cars and other small vehicles to use the speed trap-seeking gadgets.

Under the proposed radar detector ban, truckers caught using the devices would be fined $100, plus a victim surcharge. Maynard Sonntag, the minister responsible for Saskatchewan Government Insurance, said that truckers are being specifically targeted because the degree of danger is heightened when commercial vehicles are speeding.

Radar detectors are legal in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. Manitoba and Ontario bans them in all vehicles.

Terry Kostyna, president of Dasher Transportation Services as well as the Saskatchewan Trucking Association, told the Regina Leader-Post that the association has no problem with the ban if it’s in the interest of public safety.
