Shippers to meet with Conrail over delays

ARLINGTON, Va. (Nov. 29, 1999) — Delays continue to plague the former Conrail Inc. rail network, and a group of shippers plan to confront the railroad about how the problem will be addressed.

The National Industrial Transportation League, the largest association of freight shippers in the United States, will convene a public forum Jan. 11 to voice their complaints about Conrail. The location hasn’t been set yet. The league’s members account for 85% of the railroad industry’s revenue.

CSX Corp., the third-largest U.S. railroad, and No. 4 Norfolk Southern bought the Conrail system two years ago for $10.2 billion US. On June 1, the two companies split Conrail and began running their portions separately. They have struggled with delays and congestion in the northeastern U.S. ever since.
