Terror alert puts leash on N.Y., Wash.-bound trucks
NEW YORK, (Aug. 3, 2004) — Truckers bound for the downtown New York, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C. areas are facing heavy security restriction in light of the U.S. Homeland Security Advisory System alert being elevated to code Orange.
New York State MTA Police have closed the Manhattan-Bound Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to all commercial traffic, to include for-hire vans, service trucks and heavy trucks. Police will search buses at the toll plaza in a random basis. The Williamsburg Bridge from Brooklyn to Manhattan is closed to commercial vehicles and will be inspected by the NYPD.
The Port Authority Police of NY/NJ has closed the New York-bound Holland Tunnel to commercial traffic, doing random searches of vans, SUVs, service vehicles, and buses at the toll plazas. Newark Police have closed the inside (curb-side) lane at the corner of Broad and Academy streets, diverting all commercial traffic servicing the Prudential building at that location one block away for mandatory inspection prior to delivery/pick-up.
N.J. State Police, Port Authority Police and Newark Police are doing random stops and searches of commercial vehicles, buses, vans, SUVs and service vehicles in a 10-20 mile radius of downtown Newark, N.J. (which includes Newark-Liberty Int’l Airport), especially off N.J. Turnpike, 1&9, and Garden State Pkwy. exits in the direction of Newark.
DC Metropolitan Police have closed the inner turn-off lane at Pennsylvania Avenue, NW at 20th St. NW and have K-9 units on scene to search commercial vehicles that stop at that location. No systematic or random truck or bus stops and searches are being conducted at the DC location.
All commercial drivers in these areas are being required to have their documents (ID, manifest, bills of lading, registration, etc.) on board and ready to present to law enforcement at all times. They should also be prepared for and allow extra travel time for possible stops and searches by law enforcement authorities.
