Transport minister asks for public review of CN-BNSF merger

OTTAWA (May 22, 2000) — Transport Minister David Collenette asked a parliamentary committee last week to review the proposed merger of Canadian National Railway Co. and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. and determine whether the deal would be in the public interest.

Such a review would allow public comments on the proposed combination, which would create the largest railroad in North America.

Already, the federal Competition Bureau is reviewing the potential effects of the proposed merger. In the United States, in March the U.S. Surface Transportation Board imposed a 15-month moratorium on big rail mergers.

Collenette asked the committee to begin is examination this fall and requested a report by the end of the year.
