Truck tonnage climbs: Stat Can

OTTAWA, (July 20, 2004) — Tonnage carried by Canada-based long-distance for-hire carriers amounted to 305 million metric tonnes of freight in 2003, up 3.9 per cent from 2002, Statistics Canada reports.

Although domestic activities accounted for 72 per cent of the total tonnage and 78 per cent of the total shipments, transborder movements generated 48 per cent of the total revenues earned and 52 per cent of the total tonne-kilometres for these carriers.
