Trucker experiences pitfalls of load securement

CALGARY, (Sept. 30, 2004) — A British Columbia truck driver was hospitalized Tuesday after being discovered huddled underneath his truck.

The driver spent the cold night on the ground in a farmer’s field after taking a nine metre tumble off his trailer. Police said the 56-year-old driver was adjusting straps on top of a load of hay southeast of Calgary, when he lost his hold and fell.

He landed on his head and shoulder, and suffered a broken hip. He passed in and out of consciousness before gathering his strength. He eventually was able to pull himself underneath the truck for warmth, police said, adding the trucker was lucky it’s not winter yet.

A farmer discovered the man the next morning — 15 hours after the fall — and called for an ambulance.
