Truckers plan blockades at Northern Ontario lumber mills

TIMMINS, Ont. (Nov. 9, 2004) — Dozens of truck drivers are preparing blockades at a handful of local lumber mills in an effort to negotiate better pay, structured payment schedules, and compensation for overloading trucks.

The Timmins Daily Press is reporting that Peter Turner and Rick Pearce, consultants for lobby group Truckers’ Voice, are leading the frustrated Northern Ontario truckers in protest at several lumbers mills, including Tembec and Grant and Domtar, today.

Turner said that the failure of the mills to meet truckers at the negotiating table has left them little alternative.

He claims that management from the mills have refused several times to meet with Truckers’ Voice, and even challenged the owner-ops to strike. “They don’t think we’ll do it,” he told the Daily Press.
