U.S. INS bolsters reporting requirements for air, marine travellers

WASHINGTON (Jan. 6, 2003) — Canadians travelling to the United States by airplane or boat will have to give the U.S. government detailed personal information at the start and end of their trips under a new proposal by the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

The proposed INS rule would require all passengers arriving and departing to provide their name, date of birth, citizenship, sex, passport number and country of issuance, and their address while in the United States.

The proposal applies to U.S. citizens as well as foreign visitors, including Canadians.

Land crossings are not mentioned in the INS proposal summary. Last month, Deputy Prime Minister John Manley said a border security system that covers all U.S. and Canadian citizens would choke cross-border trade and traffic.
