Volvo asks NHTSA to investigate VN complaints

GREENSBORO, N.C. (April 2, 2001) — Volvo Trucks North America has asked the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to open a preliminary evaluation regarding a petition filed by the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.

OOIDA says it has received complaints involving 260 Volvo VN tractors made in North America between 1989 and 2000. Drivers reported front-end vibration, premature steer tire wear, and sheared suspension bolts.

The association, which represents owner-operators and truck drivers, said it is acting on behalf of 42 truck owners.

NHTSA has 120 days to determine if it sees a need to begin an investigation; Volvo is calling for the agency to grant the request before the deadline in order to bring the matter to a close.

Chris Patterson, Volvo vice-president of sales and marketing, said the company has contacted several of the 42 truck owners and found that maintenance practices contributed to the performance problems.
