Westport, Isuzu to build prototype natural-gas powered truck

VANCOUVER (Dec. 18, 2002) — Westport Innovations and Isuzu Motors of Tokyo plan to build a prototype Isuzu ELF truck with a natural-gas powered engine, technology that may eventually be used in Isuzu trucks sold in the United States.

The ELF commercial truck would have a payload capacity of two to three tons and would be used for light-duty applications such as city deliveries and light contracting. The truck will be powered by a natural-gas engine in the 4-litre range, the companies said. The goal is for the engine to achieve the same performance and fuel efficiency as its diesel counterpart, but with lower emissions and fuel costs.

Isuzu plans to demonstrate a prototype to the Japanese government by June 2003.
