Wholesale trade peaked in May

OTTAWA, Ont. — Wholesale sales reached a record high in May on widespread gains in most sectors — especially farm equipment and the lumber industry.

Sales rose 1.8 per cent from April to $32.7 billion, breaking the previous record of $32.4 billion set in July 2000. Sales in May were 2.4 per cent higher than those one year prior.

Nine of the 11 wholesale sectors reported increases, including farm machinery, equipment and supplies (+7.5 per cent); lumber and building materials (+5.7 per cent); and motor vehicles, parts and accessories (+3.6 per cent).
