Wildfires play havoc on highways

EDMONTON, Alta. — Wildfires are continuing to ravage northern Alberta timberland, causing road closures in the area.

Yesterday, Hwy. 28 was closed at Bon Accord, Alta. due to limited visibility from smoke in the area. Traffic was re-routed on the Lily Lake Road. The highway was re-opened later in the afternoon.

The province’s main north-south artery, Hwy. 2, was also closed between Smith and Slave Lake.

There is a driver information center set up at the junction of Hwy. 2 and Hwy. 33, where drivers can get the latest information about where it’s safe to travel.

There is also a toll-free number set up, so drivers can get the latest information on road closures due to fires. Simply call 800-272-9600 for the latest updates.
