Navistar executives looking ahead

NEW CARLISLE, IN - Backed by a new family of products and a robust economy, Navistar executives are clearly feeling positive about the future. "We have [introduced] a lot of new products in the last two years, and we got a lot of new products coming in the next two," said Denny Mooney, senior vice president - product development, during a briefing to industry media. Those new products include the LT linehaul tractor, its RH regional hauling counterpart introduced at the Expocam trade show in Montreal, the heavy vocational HX tractor launched last year to replace the PayStar, and the new HV that replaces the WorkStar. The HV was unveiled at the recent North American Commercial Vehicle Show in Atlanta, Georgia. The HX itself represents a market segment that Navistar saw drop in half after it stopped producing 15-liter engines. "Our [13-liter model], because it was an EGR engine, we couldn't cool it at some of the power and torque ratings we needed," he said.

Navistar, VW promise electric powertrain

ATLANTA, GA - Navistar will bring a medium-duty electric powertrain to the North American marketplace by 2019/20, drawing on technical expertise available through Volkswagen Truck and Bus. "There is an opportunity for electric and electric vehicles in the North American market," said Troy Clarke, chairman, president, and Chief Executive Officer, referring specifically to the Class 6/7 segment. "It is still in the early stages of the product development cycle there, but that's the target." Volkswagen officially secured a 16.6% stake in the company in March, and is already expected to bring a big bore diesel powertrain to North America by 2021 in addition to sharing other technologies. It won't be Navistar's first foray into electric vehicles. The company launched its Class 3 eStar van several years ago, but that model was ahead of its time, Clarke said in a presentation during the North American Commercial Vehicle Show. MAN, a European nameplate owned by Volkswagen, recently released an electric truck of its own in the form of the eTruck.

Navistar ending medium-duty engine production

LISLE, IL - Navistar will stop producing medium-duty engines at its plant in Melrose Park, Illinois, beginning in the second quarter of its 2018 fiscal year. Most of the proprietary engines made in Melrose Park are nine- and 10-liter models for Class 6 and 7 trucks. Navistar reintroduced the option of a 6.7-liter Cummins engine in 2013, followed last year with the option of a nine-liter Cummins. Cummins engines for Class 6 and 7 trucks are produced in Indiana and North Carolina, while Navistar makes big-bore engines for Class 8 trucks in Alabama.

New International LT Series boosts fuel economy 7%

LAS VEGAS, NV - International's new flagship line of Class 8 over-the-road trucks - the LT Series -- has been unveiled with a wide array of driver-friendly improvements in the cab, and the promise of "unrivaled fuel efficiency" overall. "The new International LT Series reflects our vision for the future of the trucking industry, with a host of advancements that support improved driver safety and productivity, as well as fuel efficiency and uptime," said Bill Kozek, Navistar's president - truck and parts. "This new vehicle reflects our strong belief that integrating the best technology will provide customers with a significant operating advantage." The LT Series will be offered as a day cab, in 56-inch low-roof and high-rise sleepers, and 73-inch high-rise and sky-rise sleepers. Options under the hood include the new 2017 Cummins X15 engine with ratings up to 500 horsepower in the Efficiency Series and up to 565 horsepower in the Performance Series. The truck can also be powered by the proprietary 2017 Navistar N13 engine, available in the spring, which produces up to 475 horsepower and 1,750 lb-ft of torque in a design that is 500 to 600 pounds lighter than other big bore engines.
